Ghost Towns

In the desert Southwest a ghost town is usually a mining camp that outlasted its ore. Wood mill frames, stone bank walls, and cabin foundations sit on a patchwork of Bureau of Land Management public land, National Park Service units, state parks, county parcels, and private patented claims. The same dry climate that kept the timber standing also keeps old vertical shafts open long after the last shift went home. Nevada’s state tourism agency puts the state’s ghost-town count above six hundred — more than its populated towns — and this atlas lists the curated slice of those places that are public, legal, and solid candidates for a planned stop.

Land status, mine hazards, and whether anyone still lives next door decide whether a visit stays useful or turns dangerous or illegal. Ruin quality almost never settles that question. A townsite can look empty from the road and still include occupied cabins or posted private ground. A mill can sit fifty feet from an unmarked shaft. Use the list below for orientation: where the places sit, who manages them, and what the ground hazards are.

Access, artifacts, and open ground

Federal and state land managers treat historic mining camps as cultural resources and as physical hazards at the same time. The Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 makes it a federal crime to excavate, remove, damage, or traffic in archaeological resources from public lands or Indian lands without a permit. Bottles, nails, hardware, and building fabric left in place are part of the record; taking them home breaks the law. Travel Nevada’s ghost-town guidance states the same rule: removing or damaging relics is illegal. On managed park units the ban is more explicit — Nevada State Parks at Berlin-Ichthyosaur prohibits removing or disturbing historic structures, artifacts, plants, or fossils, and bans metal detecting.

Open mines are a separate problem from artifact law. The BLM Abandoned Mine Lands program exists because hard-rock mines abandoned before modern reclamation left shafts, adits, highwalls, and water-filled pits across the West. Agency safety pages list drowning in flooded pits as the leading cause of death at abandoned mines, with falls into vertical openings next. Shafts are often concealed by debris, rotten timber, or thin soil; lethal gases can pool near entrances with no smell. Stay out of mine workings. Stay on marked trails where they exist. Missing warning signs still leave the openings lethal. The National Park Service inventories tens of thousands of abandoned mineral features inside the park system for the same reasons.

A minority of sites on this list are deliberately conserved as parks — Berlin Ghost Town inside Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park, Bodie State Historic Park in California, or interpreted districts with staff and posted trails. Most entries sit outside that model. Rhyolite, Goldfield, and the Bullfrog-district camps near Beatty are the more common pattern: photogenic ruins on or next to public land, mixed private ownership, and no museum restoration. How to use the list, and when to go

Entries below are grouped by state. Mining camps, company towns, railroad sidings, and “living ghost towns” with a few year-round residents all appear here when the built landscape is the reason to stop. Overlap with historic sites is intentional: a charcoal-oven park or military post may share a road with a mill town. Plenty of collapsed cabins across the basin-and-range never make this list; the set is for trip planning.

Spring and fall keep low-elevation camps walkable. Summer heat on valley floors regularly exceeds what a short ruin stop can justify without an early start and a full water plan. High-elevation sites stay snowed or mud-bound later than the valleys. Flash floods rework dirt access after storms; many camps have no cell service. Carry more water than the drive looks like it needs, treat every mine opening as lethal, and leave every artifact where it sits.
