Chambless grew around a Chambless-family store and cabins after Route 66 was paved north of Cadiz in the early 1930s. Interstate 40 drained the traffic in the 1970s, leaving a porch-front store, cabin ruins, and the restored Roadrunner's Retreat sign just west of town. The site is a short pull-off on the National Old Trails Highway in the Mojave.
