Geology
205 locations. View on the interactive map
Geology in this atlas means the places where the Southwest’s structure shows without a classroom: fault scarps, volcanic fields, playas, salt pans, badlands, meteor impact sites, and basin-fill exposures. The framework is Basin and Range tectonics — crust pulled apart into alternating mountain blocks and sediment-filled valleys — plus older marine and volcanic chapters that the faulting has lifted into view. Death Valley is the extreme case. Badwater Basin sits hundreds of feet below sea level beside Telescope Peak over eleven thousand feet high, a single structural unit still moving. The same story repeats, less dramatically, across Nevada, western Utah, southern Arizona, and eastern California.
Most of these sites keep their rock in place. On National Park Service land, rocks, minerals, and fossils stay put under general park regulations; scientific collection needs an institutional research permit. On BLM public land, personal noncommercial rockhounding may be allowed under the limits summarized on the rockhounding hub, but many geology destinations here are National Natural Landmarks, developed recreation sites, wilderness, or monuments where collecting is closed or tightly restricted. Paleontological resources on federal land are protected under the Paleontological Resources Preservation Act and related rules. Vertebrate fossils and uncommon specimens stay where they are. Caves and speleothems have their own federal protections. At most places on this list, observe, photograph, and leave the outcrop intact.
What the list covers
Entries range from classic NPS geology — Ubehebe Crater and Artist’s Palette in Death Valley, Meteor Crater in Arizona, Capulin Volcano in New Mexico — to BLM and multi-agency landscapes such as Lunar Crater Volcanic Field in Nye County and Rainbow Basin Natural Area near Barstow. Some sites are pure structure: faulted ranges, playa systems, cinder cones. Others are color and mineralogy that still sit outside rockhound take-home rules. A few sit next to wildlife refuges or natural features where habitat and rock share the same water and salt chemistry.
Check agency maps and current closures before a long dirt road. High-clearance or four-wheel-drive conditions change after every storm. Cell service is sparse in the central Nevada basins and on Death Valley’s side roads. Summer heat on valley floors is a medical hazard; National Weather Service heat guidance applies. Start early and carry more water than feels necessary. Flash floods rearrange canyon mouths and wash crossings with little local rain. Unstable crater rims, undercut badlands, and mine openings on mineralized ground are real fall and collapse hazards — stay off edges you cannot reverse from, and never enter shafts or adits.
Season and the tables
Cooler months — roughly October through April at low elevation — are the workable season for floor-level geology. High volcanic fields and mountain core complexes can hold snow and mud into late spring. Midday summer visits to salt flats and dark basalt go poorly even for short walks. The tables below sort atlas geology entries by type and region so a trip can match volcanic fields, playas and evaporites, impact and crater features, badland and fossil exposures, and structural overlooks. A site can appear under both geology and rockhounding when the rock is notable; collecting still follows that unit’s rules. Inside a park, monument, or posted natural area, treat removal as prohibited unless the managing agency says otherwise in writing for that unit.
