How to reach the crater rim

Ubehebe sits in the far north end of Death Valley National Park, roughly an hour of driving from Furnace Creek on paved roads. The usual approach is North Highway (also called Scotty’s Castle Road) to the unstaffed Grapevine Ranger Station area, then west on the signed spur to the crater. The lot is paved and large enough for buses and big RVs. It sits right on the rim, so the main pit is visible without walking. There are no restrooms at the parking area. The nearest facilities are about five miles east at Grapevine.

Bonnie Clare Road—the eastern approach from Nevada via NV-267—has long been closed through Grapevine Canyon for flood recovery work at Scotty’s Castle. Check the park alerts page before counting on that route. Ubehebe Crater Road itself reopens after storms when crews clear debris; North Highway can carry loose gravel and missing shoulders after floods. Standard park entrance fees or America the Beautiful passes apply.

What the explosion left behind

This is a maar: magma hit groundwater, flashed to steam, and blasted a crater into older rock. No lava cone built up here. Ubehebe is the largest and youngest of about a dozen maars in the local field. Park materials put the age at roughly 2,100 years; USGS work on the pyroclastic surge deposits uses a comparable late-Holocene figure (~2,100 y.b.p.). The pit is about half a mile across and 500–777 feet deep depending on which rim point is used as the datum.

The explosion cut colorful sedimentary layers and draped them with a dark mantle of ejected material. Afternoon and sunset light make those bands easier to read. Surge deposits from the eruption have been traced about nine miles from the crater center—farther than many older hazard models assumed for similar maars. The blast reworked a wide patch of desert floor. Little Hebe (also called Little Ubehebe) sits next door with a sharper, less-eroded rim and is a common short side trip from the main loop.

Walking the rim, skipping the pit in summer

The official rim trail is a 1.5-mile loop, moderate, about an hour, with roughly 500 feet of elevation gain. Most people walk it counter-clockwise, starting with an uphill leg. Little Hebe comes into view at about half a mile; many turn around there for a shorter outing. Edges are exposed and the footing is loose cinder and gravel—poor terrain for anyone uneasy with heights or for kids who bolt toward the lip. Wind is common on the rim.

Many visitors scramble into the crater. The hard part is the climb out: ankle-deep volcanic debris on a steep slope, in full sun, with no shade. Park guidance is blunt—do not attempt the descent in hot summer months, and in summer start rim hiking early while the air is still cool. Carry more water than you think you need. Pets are not allowed on any trail in the park, including carried animals, and a dog left in a vehicle in Death Valley heat is in real danger.

Trip pairing and cultural context

Ubehebe is often chained with Mesquite Springs Campground and other north-end stops when North Highway is open. Scotty’s Castle is only about eight miles east by road, but the historic district remains closed to casual entry. Limited recovery tours, when offered, require advance tickets. During the October 2015 flood that wrecked the castle complex, rangers and visitors sheltered on the crater rim after Mesquite Springs was evacuated—a reminder that this dry landscape still moves water violently after storms.

The site is culturally important to the Timbisha Shoshone. Stay on trails, leave rock and artifacts where they are, and give the place due respect. Geology here is young on a human timescale. The same steam-explosion process that opened the pit could, in principle, happen again in monogenetic fields; USGS work on surge runout is part of that hazard discussion.
