The Sad Boulders occupy a drainage cut into Bishop Tuff on the Volcanic Tableland about seven miles north of Bishop. The tuff was emplaced by the Long Valley Caldera eruption roughly 760,000 years ago; erosion left steep walls and cave-like chambers used by climbers. The Bishop Field Office manages the climbing area; parking along Fish Springs / tableland roads is on Los Angeles Department of Water and Power land where camping and fires are prohibited.
Cultural sites and artifacts are protected by federal law (ARPA/NHPA) — stay on established routes, touch and remove nothing, and follow the managing agency's and the affiliated tribe's guidance on access.
