Surface rupture you can still walk up to
On 16 December 1954, the Fairview Peak earthquake (about magnitude 7.1–7.2) struck central Nevada roughly thirty to thirty-five miles east of Fallon. About four minutes later the Dixie Valley earthquake (about magnitude 6.8–6.9) ruptured to the north. Together with two earlier Rainbow Mountain shocks that summer, the sequence produced one of the best-documented normal-faulting chains in the Basin and Range. Surface breaks stretched discontinuously for on the order of sixty to one hundred kilometers from the Gabbs Valley area north into Dixie Valley. At Fairview Peak the free face of the 1954 scarps reached heights of about twenty feet in places, with local reports of even taller offsets nearby.
Those scarps remain the reason to stop. Many historic ruptures have been paved over or smoothed by farming. The Fairview Peak breaks still read as sharp steps at the base of the range — bare or sparsely vegetated faces that catch low-angle morning and afternoon light. Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology field notes treat this corridor as one of the best public classrooms for seeing what a large Basin and Range earthquake does to the ground in seconds.
How to reach Earthquake Fault Road
From Fallon drive east on US-50 about forty miles into Churchill County’s open basin country. The Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology directions: turn south from US-50 onto a dirt road about six miles west of the Middlegate / State Route 361 junction. An “Earthquake Scarps” (or equivalent BLM interpretive) sign marks the turn. The graded dirt road — Earthquake Fault Road — runs south through Stingaree Valley along the east side of Fairview Peak. Passenger cars manage the road when dry and recently graded; washboard, soft shoulders after rain, and winter mud can demand higher clearance or a turnaround. There is no paved parking lot — pullouts and signed spurs serve as trailheads.
Two signed viewing areas stand out in NBMG guidance: one about 5.5 miles south of US-50 and another about 9–10 miles south. Interpretive markers at the BLM pullouts explain how the mountain block rose relative to the valley floor during the 1954 events. The road continues farther with additional scarps visible from the vehicle and short walks. Treat all open shafts or prospect diggings you might pass as closed and unstable.
Reading a normal-fault scarp
Basin and Range extension pulls the crust apart; steep normal faults drop valley floors and lift ranges. At Fairview Peak the 1954 slip was principally normal with a right-oblique component on some segments. Standing at a scarp, the steep bare face is the free face created when the hanging wall dropped. Over decades the free face weathers, talus accumulates, and vegetation softens the step — which is why 1954 faces still look “young” compared with older Quaternary scarps nearby. Early morning and late afternoon light throws the free face into shadow and makes offsets easier to photograph and measure with the eye.
The 1954 sequence is also a textbook case of static stress triggering: each large rupture changed stresses on neighboring faults enough to encourage the next failure within minutes to months. Trip context and cautions
This is remote public land. There is no staffed visitor center or park desk. Carry water, a full tank from Fallon or Middlegate services, and paper navigation — cell service is unreliable. Summer heat on the valley floor is extreme; winter wind and snow can close or ice the dirt road. The Fallon Range Training Complex and other military airspace operations surround parts of this region; obey all posted range boundaries and do not leave public roads into restricted ground. Stay off private ranch parcels.
Nearby highway stops on US-50 include the Middlegate Station area and, farther west, Sand Mountain and Fallon National Wildlife Refuge for different kinds of basin days. Fairview Peak is a place where a mid-twentieth-century earthquake left a free face tall enough to stand beside, signed and reachable on a graded dirt road, with nothing between you and the rock but the pullout.
