West Malpais Wilderness protects about 39,500 acres of mostly flat lava flows south of Grants inside El Malpais National Conservation Area. Hole-in-the-Wall trails from County Road 42 are the main hiking routes into kipukas and basalt. Walking is open, slow, and remote.
Cultural sites and artifacts are protected by federal law (ARPA/NHPA) — stay on established routes, touch and remove nothing, and follow the managing agency's and the affiliated tribe's guidance on access.
