Chain of Craters WSA sits in El Malpais National Conservation Area west of Grants, New Mexico, along a string of more than two dozen cinder cones. County Road 42 (Chain of Craters Back Country Byway) forms the western approach between NM-53 and NM-117. Volcanic cones, basalt, and pinyon-juniper woodland make up the landscape.
