Northeast of Flagstaff on Coconino National Forest, Old Caves Crater is a cinder cone in the San Francisco Volcanic Field. A network of moderate trails climbs about 500 feet through ponderosa and cinder fields to a summit maze of small lava caves and tunnels formed when gases escaped cooling lava. The crater also holds remains of Sinagua habitation; artifacts and walls are protected and must be left undisturbed.
Cultural sites and artifacts are protected by federal law (ARPA/NHPA) — stay on established routes, touch and remove nothing, and follow the managing agency's and the affiliated tribe's guidance on access.
