NPS national preserve protecting a ~13–14 mile-wide volcanic caldera formed about 1.2 million years ago in the Jemez Mountains. Huge mountain meadows (Valle Grande), resurgent dome Redondo Peak, streams, and abundant elk define one of the Southwest’s premier volcanic landscapes; main gate on NM 4 at mile marker 39.2.
