Amboy began as an Atlantic and Pacific Railroad water stop and grew when U.S. Route 66 funneled desert traffic through the Mojave. Roy's Motel and Café, opened in 1938, still anchors the town with its mid-century neon sign and gas pumps after Interstate 40 bypassed the alignment. School, church, and other ruins remain along National Trails Highway beside an operating airstrip.
