Ghost Town

San Marcial

Socorro County, NM

Approximate location — plotted from published sources, not a site visit, and not a guarantee of access.

Once Socorro County’s second-largest town, about 1,400 people by 1929, a Rio Grande farm and Santa Fe Railroad / Harvey House community south of Socorro. Catastrophic floods in August and September 1929 destroyed the place; the railroad withdrew and the town never recovered. Today mainly a cemetery and scant roundhouse traces mark the site on floodplain approaches.
