West of present Mariposa, a Gold Rush camp formed in 1849 around cold springs and took the name Agua Fria. It was Mariposa County's first seat in 1850–1851 before the seat moved. Little built fabric remains; the site is marked as a California Historical Landmark along the Highway 140 corridor.
