Ward grew in the Egan Range foothills after 1872 silver discoveries and peaked near 1,500 people between 1876 and 1882 before the ore played out. A million dollars in silver reportedly came from a single mine chamber; the camp was largely abandoned by the late 1880s, with later revivals. The townsite is reached from the Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park area south of Ely; open shafts and unstable ruins remain.
