The town of Isabella stood in the Kern River Valley until Isabella Dam inundated the valley in the early 1950s. Foundations and debris of the flooded settlement (often discussed with nearby Whiskey Flat/Keyesville-era sites) appear when Lake Isabella drops in drought years and disappear again when the reservoir refills. The Corps of Engineers reservoir remains a developed recreation lake; the townsite itself is only episodically above water.
