Matlin was established in 1869 as a Central Pacific Railroad siding and section point on the first transcontinental line across the Great Salt Lake Desert. After mainline realignment the town faded; grade, berms, and sparse remnants remain along the BLM backcountry byway. It is one stop among several railroad ghost towns between Golden Spike and Lucin.
