Ghost Town

Dragon

Uintah County, UT

Coordinate verified

Gilsonite mining camp and former Uintah Railway terminus at the mouth of Dragon Canyon near the Colorado line in eastern Uintah County. Named for the Black Dragon Mine’s sinuous asphalt vein, it boomed after the narrow-gauge railroad reached town in 1904 and faded as the line pushed north; mining ended in 1938 and the railway in 1939. Hotel rubble, foundations, and a small cemetery sit in very remote Uinta Basin desert.
