Former Phelps Dodge company coal town in Vermejo River country northeast of Cimarron. It peaked near six thousand residents with coking ovens and full company amenities, and was devastated by mine disasters in 1913 and 1923. After 1950 mine closure the town was sold and razed; the Dawson Cemetery (NRHP), with rows of white iron crosses, is the main visitor landmark.
