Site of the first major gold rush on the eastern slope of California’s Sierra Nevada (late 1850s), near the junction of Clearwater/Virginia and Dog Town Creeks south of Bridgeport. Name from miners’ slang for camps of rough huts. Only scant ruins remain beside the creek cliffs; California Historical Landmark No. 792 plaque on US-395 overlooks the diggings.
