Ghost Town

Mercur

Tooele County, UT

Coordinate verified

Hard-rock mining ghost town in the Oquirrh Mountains of Tooele County, noted as the site of the first successful commercial cyanide gold process in the United States (1891). Twice a boom camp (as Lewiston, then Mercur), it peaked near the turn of the twentieth century before fire, ore exhaustion, and later open-pit reworking left little public fabric near reclaimed mine ground. Stay on public rights-of-way and off fenced reclamation.
