On Muddy Creek in the southern San Rafael Swell, Tomsich Butte is where John Tomsich and partners opened uranium mines in the early 1950s. Old mine roads, equipment remnants, and canyon access remain around the butte; Hondoo Arch stands across the creek. The BLM trailhead is a common start for creek walks toward the Chute of Muddy Creek and Hidden Splendor country.
Cultural sites and artifacts are protected by federal law (ARPA/NHPA) — stay on established routes, touch and remove nothing, and follow the managing agency's and the affiliated tribe's guidance on access.
