Adolph Sutro's legendary 3.88-mile Comstock drainage and access tunnel (1869–1878), driven from the Carson River valley near Dayton northwest to the Savage Mine under Virginia City. The portal and surviving industrial buildings are being restored by the Friends of Sutro Tunnel; guided tours enter the rebuilt first ~50 feet of the adit and walk the historic yard — a landmark of Western mining engineering.
