Narrow metamorphic reef that funneled every wagon, stage, and ore team onto the Comstock Lode. Nevada State Historical Marker No. 223 marks the gorge where Gold Canyon opens toward Virginia City; 1850 placer gold was found nearby and a stone battlement once crowned the eastern rim during the 1860 Paiute War. Today the pin is a short roadside stop with interpretive text and a clear sense of why this notch controlled access to the silver camps.
