Approximate location — plotted from published sources, not a site visit, and not a guarantee of access.
More than 160,000 acres of the Old Woman Mountains in the eastern Mojave became wilderness in 1994, managed by the BLM Needles Field Office. Elevations run from low desert washes to Old Woman Peak above 5,000 feet. Dirt roads off historic Route 66 and Essex-area routes provide access; no developed facilities inside the wilderness.
Cultural sites and artifacts are protected by federal law (ARPA/NHPA) — stay on established routes, touch and remove nothing, and follow the managing agency's and the affiliated tribe's guidance on access.
