North of Essex along the wartime I-40/Route 66 corridor, Camp Clipper (with Camp Essex) was a 1942 Desert Training Center divisional camp. The 93rd Infantry Division and later Italian POWs occupied the site; a large earthen reservoir and faint rock-lined walkways remain. BLM manages the remnants and posts a monument plaque at a nearby I-40 rest area.
