Camp Iron Mountain is the best-preserved of Patton’s World War II Desert Training Center camps along California 62 east of Twentynine Palms. Soldiers outlined tent streets with rock alignments and built standing Protestant and Catholic stone chapels plus a huge outdoor relief map of the maneuver area. The Bureau of Land Management manages the ACEC; a monument plaque sits on the NS812 spur from the highway.
