Approximate location — plotted from published sources, not a site visit, and not a guarantee of access.
Palen/McCoy Wilderness holds roughly a quarter-million acres of Mojave Desert ranges—the Palen, McCoy, Granite, Little Maria, and Arica Mountains—separated by broad bajadas. Managed by the BLM Palm Springs–South Coast Field Office, it is one of California's larger roadless desert blocks. Access is by dirt roads from I-10 and desert routes near Desert Center and Blythe.
Cultural sites and artifacts are protected by federal law (ARPA/NHPA) — stay on established routes, touch and remove nothing, and follow the managing agency's and the affiliated tribe's guidance on access.
