A 1937 fire lookout stands on Tahquitz Peak at about 8,846 feet in the San Jacinto Mountains, the highest and longest continuously operated lookout in San Bernardino National Forest. Hikers reach it via Devil’s Slide or South Ridge trails, both requiring wilderness permits from the Idyllwild area. Volunteers still staff the cab in season. The summit overlooks the desert divide and much of the San Jacinto range.
