Approximate location — plotted from published sources, not a site visit, and not a guarantee of access.
The Sylvania Mountains Wilderness covers about 18,700 acres of desert mountain country east of Bishop along the California–Nevada line. Closed four-wheel-drive tracks double as hiking routes from bajada into higher pinyon woodland. The area is rarely visited. Water is essentially absent, and summer temperatures are extreme.
Cultural sites and artifacts are protected by federal law (ARPA/NHPA) — stay on established routes, touch and remove nothing, and follow the managing agency's and the affiliated tribe's guidance on access.
