About 53,000 acres of BLM open desert south of Barstow, in the triangle between Interstate 15 and State Route 247. Steep Stoddard Mountains, sandy washes, and a broad central valley support motorcycle, ATV, and 4x4 use from several dirt entrances including Hodge Road and Stoddard Wells Road. Desert tortoise live here, and deep historic mine shafts remain in places.
Cultural sites and artifacts are protected by federal law (ARPA/NHPA) — stay on established routes, touch and remove nothing, and follow the managing agency's and the affiliated tribe's guidance on access.
