Red Sands is a BLM off-highway area of mesquite coppice dunes and hard-packed desert tracks about twenty miles south of Alamogordo on U.S. 54. Riders use more than a hundred miles of user-developed trails on low dunes rather than tall sand mountains. The same ground is used for plant walks and winter day use when the White Sands basin is crowded.
