A roughly three-mile climb from Rainbow Valley into the Sierra Estrella Wilderness rises from about 1,550 feet to Quartz Peak at 4,052 feet. An old track gives way to a ridge trail; the last stretch is a boulder scramble to a white quartz summit block. Southwest of Phoenix, it is the main legal non-permit day hike onto the Estrella crest.
