Approximate location — plotted from published sources, not a site visit, and not a guarantee of access.
About 63,000 acres of Sonoran Desert mountain country in the Sonoran Desert National Monument east of Gila Bend form the North Maricopa Mountains Wilderness. Saguaro-studded bajadas and rugged peaks hold backpacking and horse routes, including Margie's Cove. Ordinary visits require no fees or permits.
Cultural sites and artifacts are protected by federal law (ARPA/NHPA) — stay on established routes, touch and remove nothing, and follow the managing agency's and the affiliated tribe's guidance on access.
