About 25,500 acres of volcanic mesas, desert slopes, and high ridges around Pioneertown make up Pioneertown Mountains Preserve. The Wildlands Conservancy manages the preserve as free public open space linking Joshua Tree National Park, San Bernardino National Forest, and the Bighorn Mountain Wilderness. Trails climb from the valley floor toward the Sawtooth and high ridgelines.
