Approximate location — plotted from published sources, not a site visit, and not a guarantee of access.
The Hole-in-the-Rock wayside sits on Utah Highway 12 about six miles east of Escalante. Interpretive signs introduce the 1879–1880 Mormon pioneer expedition that blasted and winched wagons down the Colorado River cliffs at Hole-in-the-Rock, far down the dirt road south of Escalante. The wayside is an overlook and history stop, not the cliff descent itself.
Cultural sites and artifacts are protected by federal law (ARPA/NHPA) — stay on established routes, touch and remove nothing, and follow the managing agency's and the affiliated tribe's guidance on access.
