Phipps–Death Hollow protects upper Escalante River canyon country east of Escalante: Navajo sandstone slots and tributary hollows. BLM manages the wilderness study area for primitive recreation. Death Hollow and connecting routes are multi-day backpacks with wet canyon travel, reached from roads and trailheads near Escalante.
Cultural sites and artifacts are protected by federal law (ARPA/NHPA) — stay on established routes, touch and remove nothing, and follow the managing agency's and the affiliated tribe's guidance on access.
