North of Big Bear Lake, Forest Road 3N16 is the main OHV and high-clearance route into Holcomb Valley. The valley was the scene of 1860s gold discoveries and retains historic mining and settlement sites on San Bernardino National Forest land. The dirt road also links dispersed camps and side routes used for recreation.
Cultural sites and artifacts are protected by federal law (ARPA/NHPA) — stay on established routes, touch and remove nothing, and follow the managing agency's and the affiliated tribe's guidance on access.
