Carrizo Plain National Monument protects a large valley grassland west of Bakersfield, with Soda Lake’s white alkali bed as its geographic center. BLM manages wildlife habitat, seasonal wildflower displays, and San Andreas fault landscape. Soda Lake Road is the main through-route. Overlooks and the Goodwin Education Center orient visitors in a remote, lightly developed setting.
Cultural sites and artifacts are protected by federal law (ARPA/NHPA) — stay on established routes, touch and remove nothing, and follow the managing agency's and the affiliated tribe's guidance on access.
