From 1902 until Highway 12 opened in 1940, packhorses carried mail between Boulder and Escalante on this slickrock route. The signed trailhead west of Boulder still starts the historic Boulder Mail Trail, a cairned ramble across slickrock into Sand Creek and Death Hollow. Day hikers often turn around at the Death Hollow rim; overnights need a monument permit.
