White Mountains Wilderness covers the crest and east slopes of the White Mountains east of Big Pine and Bishop. California Highway 168/266 and high forest roads reach trailheads above 10,000 feet near ancient Great Basin bristlecone pine stands managed primarily in the adjacent Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. The wilderness itself is roadless high desert and alpine terrain with extreme weather.
