Picturesque Mother Lode gold town in a bowl-shaped valley (miners thought it a volcanic crater). Settled 1848–49 (Soldiers Gulch); by the 1850s a full camp with hotels, library, and theater after hydraulic mining expanded. California Historical Landmark No. 29; many Gold Rush-era buildings remain on Main and Consolation Streets in a living small community.
