Tierra Amarilla Community Ditch is a historic irrigation system serving the village of Tierra Amarilla in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 29 September 1986 (NRIS 86002307) under the same La Tierra Amarilla multiple resource context as El Porvenir and neighboring community ditches. Ownership is the Tierra Amarilla Community Ditch Association, Tierra Amarilla, NM 87575. The Register counts the irrigation system as one contributing structure.

The nomination states the ditch was dug in 1862 and registered with the State Engineer’s Office (file #0430). It serves about 75 plots and bisects Tierra Amarilla, irrigating residential garden plots as well as larger fields. Diversion is from Rito de Tierra Amarilla about 2 miles east-southeast of the village; the desague (discharge) is about 0.2 miles north of La Corridera Road, 1.7 miles west of the Tierra Amarilla courthouse. Total length is about 4.4 miles; nominated acreage about 21.3 acres (a corridor roughly 20 feet by 4.4 miles, ten feet either side of mid-ditch). Midway dimensions: bottom width 6 feet, top width 9 feet, depth 1.5 feet. Irrigated acreage was listed at about 710 acres. One major contra acequia, the High Line Lateral, is noted. Concrete headgate and concrete, metal, and wood lateral gates are present; as with other ditches in the MRA, these modern control works are not the basis of significance.

Governance and landscape

Significance parallels the other Tierra Amarilla ditches: Criterion A for the ditch’s role in shaping the cultural landscape and in local governance. The channel forms the boundary between green agricultural land and arid sagebrush sand hills, and it served as a property line before fences and most roads. The ditch association organized communal obligation, annual cleaning, water turns, and decision-making that structured Hispanic agrarian village life in northern New Mexico. Tierra Amarilla itself is not incorporated; the association’s continued operation is described in the nomination as a vital social link to historic cultural roots.

Access: working water system, not a park

Do not treat this acequia as a public trail. Banks and laterals commonly run through private lots and fields. The National Register boundary is a thin linear polygon along the ditch; listing does not open private land or authorize walking the embankment, photographing residences at close range, or operating gates. There is no staffed interpretive site, fee station, or official parking area dedicated to the ditch. Public county and state roads through Tierra Amarilla may cross or parallel the system; stay on those rights-of-way unless you have explicit permission from the ditch association or landowners.
