Between 1911 and 1913, the Saline Valley Salt Company built a 13-mile aerial tramway to haul salt over the Inyo Mountains into the Owens Valley. Steel towers and cable remnants still mark the steep early-twentieth-century route, some within Death Valley National Park. Cerro Gordo Road from near Keeler provides high-clearance access toward the Owens Valley side towers.
Cultural sites and artifacts are protected by federal law (ARPA/NHPA) — stay on established routes, touch and remove nothing, and follow the managing agency's and the affiliated tribe's guidance on access.
