Approximate location — plotted from published sources, not a site visit, and not a guarantee of access.
From Turkey Creek near the east end of Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness, the Rug Road climbs toward the high country of the Galiuro / Santa Teresa country. The historic mining track is steep, rocky, and known for tire-shredding rock; high-clearance four-wheel-drive and recovery gear are standard. It is a route destination rather than a developed recreation site.
Cultural sites and artifacts are protected by federal law (ARPA/NHPA) — stay on established routes, touch and remove nothing, and follow the managing agency's and the affiliated tribe's guidance on access.
