Red Canyon Visitor Center (Flaming Gorge)

Rim complex above the reservoir

The Red Canyon Visitor Center sits on the south rim of Red Canyon inside Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, administered by Ashley National Forest. Thair H. Blackburn of Ogden designed the building. It finished in summer 1965 after construction that began the year before. Floor-to-wall glazing and outdoor rim viewpoints were the design priority. The canyon here is roughly 700 feet wide and on the order of 1,400 feet deep. Forest Service materials list the drop from the visitor-center viewpoint as 1,631 feet into the flooded canyon of Flaming Gorge Reservoir.

The center is the interpretive hub of the Red Canyon Recreation Complex, which also includes the Red Canyon Overlook observation site a short walk or drive from the same parking area. Exhibits and desk staff cover natural history, cultural history, and trip logistics for the larger NRA — dam access, reservoir recreation, campgrounds, and scenic loops. For many drivers on UT-44 between Vernal and Manila, this is the only stop that puts them at the edge of the gorge rather than at the waterline or the dam.

Getting there and seasonal hours

Access is via Red Canyon Road (Forest Road 095), which leaves Utah Highway 44 on the scenic byway stretch linking US-191 near Vernal with Manila. From Vernal the drive is roughly 40 miles north on 191 then 44. From the Wyoming side, Rock Springs and Green River each sit on the order of eighty highway miles north of the turnoff (191 from Rock Springs; 530 from Green River). Salt Lake City is roughly 205 miles west. Red Canyon Road is a developed forest road suitable for ordinary passenger cars in dry conditions. It climbs to about 7,400 feet, so winter snow and ice are normal.

The visitor center is a summer facility, open daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Check the Forest Service page for current hours. Depending on staffing and weather, weekend hours sometimes continue after Labor Day. Rim viewpoints stay open year-round even when the building is locked. Vault toilets near the parking lot remain available year-round; flush restrooms open May through September with the building. Picnic tables are on site. The Forest Service page states potable water is not available at the visitor-center site — bring water from town or from a campground that supplies it.

On the ground and nearby trail time

Outside the glass wall, short paved and packed paths lead to rail-guarded overlooks. Hikers and mountain bikers use the Red Canyon Rim Trail, which starts at the complex and links the string of developed overlooks and campgrounds along the rim. Adjacent Red Canyon Campground sits in a grassy meadow of lodgepole and ponderosa a short distance along the same access road — a solid overnight base on the rim if a long day drive from Vernal does not appeal. Greens Lake, near Red Canyon Lodge, offers small-water fishing and canoeing without dropping to the main reservoir.

The complex is a rim overlook with an interpretive desk. Boat launches and dam tours are elsewhere on the highway network; the Flaming Gorge Dam visitor facilities sit separately on US-191 near Dutch John. Sheep Creek Geological Area and other NRA loops make natural same-day chains for anyone already driving from Vernal or Manila. At roughly 7,400 feet, summer afternoons can still run hot in full sun on the rim; mornings and evenings cool off. Thunderstorms are common in July and August. In winter the interior restrooms stay closed, FR 095 can hold snow, and the desk is unstaffed — but the overlooks still show the full depth of the canyon when the road is passable.
