Rainbow Falls drops about 101 feet on the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River inside Devils Postpile National Monument. The plunge is cut in rhyodacite lava that erupted tens of thousands of years ago; undercutting of vertically jointed rock has driven the falls slowly upstream. A maintained trail reaches the overlooks from the monument ranger station or the Reds Meadow shuttle stops. Rainbows form in the mist on sunny afternoons.
