Kofa Wilderness covers most of Kofa National Wildlife Refuge between Yuma and Quartzsite east of US Highway 95. The refuge was established in 1939 for desert bighorn sheep; more than 500,000 acres are designated wilderness. Palm Canyon holds a small stand of California fan palms reached by a short trail. Otherwise travel is cross-country among volcanic peaks and desert washes.
