Kofa National Wildlife Refuge covers roughly 665,000 acres of Sonoran Desert mountains and valleys northeast of Yuma. It was established primarily for desert bighorn sheep; Palm Canyon’s native fan palms are a popular short hike. Free entry; high-clearance roads, no water, and extreme summer heat. Watch for open mines in old claim country.
