The Harquahala Mountain Back Country Byway is a roughly 10.5-mile unmaintained gravel road that climbs more than 3,000 feet to the 5,681-foot summit of Harquahala Mountain west of Phoenix. Four-wheel drive and high clearance are required. The top holds wide desert views, remnants associated with the historic Harquahala Peak Observatory, and access to the Harquahala Mountains Wilderness pack trail.
