One of the most intact 19th-century frontier posts in the Southwest: 240 acres and ~88 stone buildings (officers’ row, barracks, hospital, chapel, stables) set amid open BLM land south of Capitan. Founded in 1855 against the Mescalero Apache, later used as a Merchant Marine TB hospital and WWII internment camp; now a New Mexico Historic Site museum with self-guided grounds.
